Need For Plasma

Human plasma is an essential starting material for therapies that treat patients with serious rare, chronic, and often genetic diseases such as hemophilia, primary immunodeficiency, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and autoimmune and neurological disorders. Plasma is also used to treat individuals during major surgery, who have sustained burns or are suffering from trauma. Plasma protein therapies that are manufactured to treat these rare diseases and conditions are unique:

  • They are produced from expensive starting materials: human plasma or through biotechnology (recombinant DNA technology);
  • No generic therapies exist;
  • No substitute therapies exist; and
  • Plasma collection and plasma protein therapy manufacturing is highly regulated in the U.S. and Europe to ensure safe, high-quality therapies.

Without a consistent supply of plasma from donors like you, patients would be in danger of not receiving the medical treatment and plasma protein therapies they need to live or lead healthy, productive lives.
